Abstract | Palynological studies of Silurian-Devonian limestones from Quebec have revealed the presence of miniature Chitinozoans, attached to the surface of specimens of a normal size. Juvenile stages of these problematic organisms have never before been reported. This discovery represents a significant advance toward understanding the life history and relationships of the Chitinozoans, making it evident that they are neither metazoan eggs or egg cases nor of a plant affinity, as had been previously suggested, but are instead a monophyletic group of rhizopods. A hypothetical ontogenetic cycle is reconstructed that includes an alternation of generations. |
